Tom's Story

Tom has been attending Reach for several years, taking part in a range of courses. From gardening at Flower Pod Southwell to IT and Mind, Body and Soul. Tom says “I probably like Art the most,” he says. “My favourite thing is drawing characters – it’s a challenge getting the eyes right.”

Led by Art Tutor Buster, the group has been exploring seasonal themes and natural wonders, helping clients build skills at their own pace. When Buster started teaching the Art course, he noticed Tom was quite shy about his abilities and often questioning his skills. Throughout the year, Tom’s confidence has grown significantly, as he says “I feel proud when Buster puts my art on the wall. I can point to it and say ‘I did that one’.”

Tom’s creativity doesn’t stop at Reach. A recent project at Flower Pod designing a flower bed has helped him in his role at a local garden centre, where he now draws layout ideas. At Reach "he can express himself by being creative with his friends,” say his parents, Karen and Tony. “This supports his self-esteem, mental health and wellbeing – coming home with a smile!”

Tom’s story shows how creative opportunities at Reach empower adults with learning disabilities to develop confidence, skills and independence. With your support, we can offer more courses like this – from art and gardening to drama and dance – helping people like Tom feel healthier, happier and more connected.
