It’s been an exciting time for our Boccia Club! At the start of the year, Reach Mansfield received a donation of £1000 from One Stop ‘Carriers for Causes’ – a grant programme that supports projects that benefit local communities and improve lives. The funding has gone towards the running of our weekly Boccia Club and has helped us purchase our own – much-needed – Boccia set!
The funding from ‘Carriers for Causes’ has come at the perfect time for the Boccia Club. Reach Mansfield Project Worker, Katie explained, “For the first time ever, Reach Mansfield will be entering their own Boccia team into the Midland Games in July. The funding has given us the opportunity to purchase our own Boccia set, enabling club members to improve their technique and help prepare for the Games. With the guidance of our fantastic coach, clients have learnt new skills including team work, communication and problem solving.”
Boccia enables people with learning disabilities to develop their mobility and coordination as well as offering opportunities for socialising and friendship. Katie said, “The group is growing in size, enthusiasm and skill. The team are excited about participating in the Midland Games and have risen to the challenge, so all that is left to do is practice!”
Our Boccia sessions complement our Active Me project which is part of a Mansfield-wide initiative led by Mansfield District Leisure Trust funded by Sport England. The Boccia Club is held at Reach Mansfield every Tuesday from 3pm to 4pm. For more information, contact Katie on 01623 232748 or email katie.fear@reachuk.org.
