At Flower Pod Newark we want to encourage more wildlife visitors to the site. We have built bug hotels, planters, expanded a small pond into a much larger pond, built a dead hedge and hibernaculum and are working on creating a wild meadow. We have raked the ground and collected seeds from our own plants and from nearby hedgerow as we wanted to keep things local. Our soil is very rich at Flower Pod Newark so we had to put straw down over the ground to prepare it for the wild meadow seed.
We have also been busy building a Fedge- a Fence/hedge, which we hope will encourage birds to help pollinate our vegetables and also acts as a divide between our lawn and vegetable patch.
At the minute we get a few cats on site as we are located in an urban area. We hope to see many more animals as the site develops. We have already seen one frog near our pond and hope to spot more!
We are setting up a wildlife camera so we can learn more about the wildlife visitors we see.
