Dead Hedge
Green Citizens Blog December 17th, 2022
At Flower Pod Newark we have built a dead hedge made up of lots of cuttings from the site. The dead hedge sits along the front edge near our resident beehive.
Pruning around the site creates cuttings which we recycle. Phil said “We knock the post in and weave the cuttings in, the string keeps them tied together. We had started to build it in another place on the site but we moved it to build the bird hide. It works well here to provide protection from the bees."
There is a gap in the dead hedge where we will build a stile to allow access for the Beekeeper. The net behind the hedge will come down when the hedge is finished. We hope the dead hedge will encourage more wildlife visitors into our garden too!
In the same area of the garden we have also incorporated a hibernaculum. Amelia explains “The hibernaculum is there to provide hibernating animals shelter from other animals. It helps animals that go to sleep this time of year.”
